The École Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et des Microtechniques (ENSMM) is a special engineering school in France. It's known as a "Grandes Écoles," which means it's a top-level school for advanced studies. ENSMM is part of Polyméca, a group of schools that work together on mechanical engineering.

History of ENSMM

This school started a long time ago in 1902. It was first called the Laboratoire de Chronométrie by the Université de Franche-Comté. "Chronométrie" is about measuring time very accurately, like in watches.

In 1961, its name changed to École nationale supérieure de chronométrie et micromécanique (ENSCM). The area where the school is located has a strong history of making clocks and watches. Because of this, ENSMM focuses a lot on designing and making tiny mechanical devices, also known as micromachines, and robots.

Where is ENSMM Located?

The ENSMM school is in the city of Besançon, which is in the eastern part of France. It's about a four-hour drive from Paris. It's also about two and a half hours from Strasbourg and Lyon.

What Students Learn at ENSMM

Every year, about 250 students become engineers at ENSMM. They can choose to study in one of six exciting areas.

Study Programs in France

Students at ENSMM learn about many different topics, including:

  • Materials science: This is about how different materials work and how to use them.
  • Mechatronics: This field combines mechanics, electronics, and computer science. It's used to design smart machines.
  • Mechanical engineering: This involves designing, building, and maintaining mechanical systems.
  • Micromechanics: This is about making very small mechanical parts and devices.
  • Optoelectronics and Microelectromechanical systems: This combines light and electronics, and also tiny electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Industrial engineering: This focuses on making processes and systems more efficient.

Students can spend their final year at ENSMM or at another school within the Polyméca network.

Opportunities to Study Abroad

ENSMM has partnerships with many universities around the world. This means students can go to another country to study for a while. Some of these partner universities include:
