École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur is a French-language Catholic high school in Greater Sudbury, Ontario. It's one of four such schools in the area. The school is managed by the Conseil scolaire de district catholique du Nouvel-Ontario, which is a French Catholic school board. You can find it at 261 Notre-Dame Avenue, right next to city soccer fields and tennis courts that students also use. The current principal is Paul Henry, and Suzanne Lapointe is the vice-principal.

The school has over 400 students, which is more than it was first built for. Because of the large number of students, three temporary classrooms, called portables, were added behind the main building. These portables will stay until the school finishes a planned expansion. The school grounds also feature Sudbury's first monument celebrating Franco-Ontarian culture. This monument was unveiled on September 25, 2008.

School History: From College to High School

The idea for this school began with two Jesuit priests, Father Joseph Specht and Father Jean-Baptiste Nolin. They helped create the Collège du Sacré-Cœur de Sudbury. This was the first, and for a long time, the only classical college in Northern Ontario. It first opened its doors in 1913 and was a school only for boys.

In 1957, the college changed its name and became the University of Sudbury. Later, from 1967 to 1977, the building was used as one of three campuses for Cambrian College. It then reopened as a high school for boys from 1978.

After that, the building was used by the Gymzone Family Fitness Centre, which has since moved. Collège Boréal also used the space from 1995 to 1997 while their new campus was being built.

École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur officially opened its doors in 2003 after some renovations. You can still see parts of the original building's foundation in the school's entrance. When it first opened, many students came from the former École secondaire catholique l'Héritage, which had closed down. The last students from l'Héritage graduated in 2007.

Student Life: Uniforms and More

Just like Collège Notre-Dame, another French Catholic high school in Sudbury, École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur has a uniform policy. Students can choose from different types of pants, capris, or shorts. Girls also have the option of wearing kilts. For tops, students can wear rugby shirts, blouses, golf shirts, or sweatshirts. The golf shirts come in white, royal blue, and light blue.
