Édgar Filiberto Ramírez Arellano is a talented actor from Venezuela. He was born on March 25, 1977.
Before becoming a famous actor, Édgar studied communications at the Andrés Bello Catholic University. He even thought about becoming a diplomat, which is someone who represents their country in other nations. However, after a filmmaker named Guillermo Arriaga praised a short film he had made, Édgar decided to turn his acting hobby into his main job.
He has played many exciting roles. For example, he was a CIA agent in the action movie The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). He also played a famous figure called Carlos the Jackal in the TV series Carlos (2010). For this role, he won an important award called the César Award for Most Promising Actor. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for Best Actor. Later, he played another CIA agent in Zero Dark Thirty (2012) and the famous boxer Roberto Durán in the movie Hands of Stone (2016).
In 2018, Édgar received many awards for playing Gianni Versace in the TV series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. He also had a role in the HBO series The Undoing in 2020. In 2022, he was part of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival, which is a very important film event.
Early life
Édgar Ramírez was born in San Cristóbal, Táchira, Venezuela. His mother, Soday Arellano, was a lawyer, and his father, Filiberto Ramírez, was a military officer. He has a sister named Nataly.
Édgar spent parts of his childhood traveling to different countries. This helped him learn many languages! He can speak Spanish, English, French, Italian, and German very well.
In 1999, he graduated from the Andrés Bello Catholic University in Caracas. He earned a degree in mass communication, which is about how information is shared with many people. He was also interested in international relations, which deals with how countries interact. While in college, he worked as a journalist, reporting on politics.
Later, he became the executive director of Dale al Voto, a foundation in Venezuela. He and his team created campaigns for radio, TV, and movie theaters to encourage people to vote. Even though he worked in communications, Édgar was always drawn to performing arts. He helped with international promotions for the Viart Film Festival. He once said, "I'll be lying if I told you I dreamed about becoming an actor as a kid. But I wasn't any different to the world of performing arts. I was always very attracted to it. I just never thought about it as a career." Eventually, he decided to follow his passion for acting.
Acting career
Édgar Ramírez first became known as an actor in the popular TV show Cosita rica. This show aired from 2003 to 2004 and had 270 episodes.
In 2005, he made his first big movie appearance in Domino. He played Choco, a character who was the love interest of Domino Harvey. The movie was directed by Tony Scott.
He also appeared in Vantage Point, directed by Pete Travis. In this exciting movie, Édgar joined a cast of famous international actors. He played Javier, a former special forces soldier who is forced to kidnap the American President to save his brother. He also starred in Cyrano Fernandez, an independent film.
Édgar has been in many other movies. These include Che by Steven Soderbergh, where he played Ciro Redondo, a Cuban revolutionary. He was also in Punto y raya (Step Forward), where he played a Colombian soldier named Pedro. This film was even considered for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2004.
In 2007, he played Paz, a skilled agent, in The Bourne Ultimatum. Later, in 2010, he played the real-life figure Carlos the Jackal in the French-German TV series Carlos. For this role, he won the César Award for Most Promising Actor at the French César Awards 2011. Édgar has also lent his voice to language learning programs, helping people learn Spanish.
In 2012, Édgar Ramírez played Ares, the God of War, in Wrath of the Titans. This was a sequel to Clash of the Titans. He also played Larry in the film Zero Dark Thirty by Kathryn Bigelow. In 2015, he played Bodhi in the remake of Point Break. In 2016, he was Dr. Kamal Abdic in The Girl on the Train.
In 2017, Édgar played Gianni Versace in the second season of the series American Crime Story. In 2019, he joined the cast of the spy thriller movie The 355, which came out in 2022. In this film, he worked again with his American Crime Story co-star, Penélope Cruz.
Philanthropy
Édgar Ramírez cares about helping others. He supports the "No Dispares" (Don't Shoot) campaign by Amnesty International. This organization works to protect human rights around the world. The campaign aims to reduce injuries and deaths caused by the careless use of guns.
Édgar was also part of "5 Senses in Action," an organization that helps children with special needs. In 2008, he participated in an outdoor event where he used gestures, played, and sang to help congenitally deaf and/or blind children experience sensory activities.
