Élisabeth Baume-Schneider (born 24 December 1963) is a Swiss politician. She is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP). Since January 2023, she has been a member of the Federal Council. This is like being part of the Swiss government's main leadership team. She was the first person from the Canton of Jura to be elected to this important role.

Early Life and Education
Élisabeth Baume-Schneider grew up on a farm in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. Her grandparents came from the Seeland area in Canton Bern. She finished high school in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1983.
After high school, she studied social sciences at the University of Neuchâtel. She earned her degree in 1987. For many years, from 1989 to 2002, she worked as a social worker. She helped people in the Franches-Montagnes area and later for the government of Jura.
Political Journey
Élisabeth Baume-Schneider became interested in politics early on. She was inspired by groups like Amnesty International. She joined the Social Democratic Party (SP), which is a political party in Switzerland.
Serving Jura
In 1995, she became a member of the Parliament of Jura. This is like the local government for the Canton of Jura. She even led the Parliament in 2000.
From 2002 to 2015, she was a minister in the government of the Canton of Jura. She was in charge of education, culture, and sports. During this time, she helped with important talks about moving the town of Moutier from Canton Bern to Jura. She also helped create a high school exam in Jura that was in two languages.
National Role
In 2019, Élisabeth Baume-Schneider was elected to the Council of States. This is one of the two parts of the Swiss national parliament. In November 2022, she announced she wanted to join the Federal Council.
Becoming a Federal Councillor
On 7 December 2022, she was elected to the Federal Council. She took the place of another politician from her party, Simonetta Sommaruga, who was retiring. Élisabeth Baume-Schneider made history as the first person from the Canton of Jura to join the Federal Council. Jura is the newest of Switzerland's cantons.
When she first joined, she was assigned to lead the Federal Department of Justice and Police. This department handles laws and safety. In 2024, she moved to lead the Federal Department of Home Affairs.
Personal Life
Élisabeth Baume-Schneider is married and has two children. Her family's official home is in Les Breuleux, Jura. She even owns some special Blacknose sheep there.
She had her second child while she was leading the Grand Council of Jura in 2000. She has spoken about trying to balance her busy work life with her family life. She is thankful that her partner reduced his work hours to help with their children.
