Ángel Roffo (born December 30, 1882 – died July 23, 1947) was an Argentine doctor. He spent his whole medical career studying and treating cancer.

Early Life and Education

Ángel Roffo was born in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He went to the University of Buenos Aires to study medicine. In 1909, he finished his studies and graduated. His final paper was about cancer.

After graduating, he became a leader in the urology department at the university. From 1912 to 1915, he was a professor of Anatomical Pathology. This means he taught about how diseases affect the body's tissues. He continued teaching in this field until 1931.

Leading Cancer Research

In 1912, another scientist named Daniel Cranwell shared important research about cancer. This work showed how important it was to study cancer in a special institute.

Because of this, the Instituto de Medicina Experimental (Institute of Experimental Medicine) was created in 1922. Dr. Roffo became its director. He quickly became the most important cancer specialist in all of Latin America.

Global Connections

During the 1920s, Dr. Roffo traveled a lot to Europe. He met many famous scientists there. One of them was Marie Curie, a Nobel Prize winner. They talked about how to use radiotherapy to treat cancer. Radiotherapy uses radiation to kill cancer cells.

Smoking and Cancer

Dr. Roffo was one of the first scientists to show a clear link between smoking and cancer. By the late 1920s, he was sure that smoking caused tumors. In the 1930s, he wrote many papers about how tobacco could cause cancer.

His research was very important. It helped people understand the dangers of smoking long before many others did.

Awards and Legacy

Ángel Roffo received many awards for his important work in science. He got honors from countries like Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Germany.

Dr. Roffo passed away on July 23, 1947. To honor his amazing contributions, the Institute of Oncology at the University of Buenos Aires was renamed after him.
