Ñiquén is a special area in Chile called a commune. It is located in the north of the Ñuble Region. The Punilla Province is where you can find it.
Ñiquén is bordered by two rivers: the Perquilauquén River to the north and the Ñiquén River to the south. To its north is the commune of Parral. To the west, it borders Cauquenes, both in the Maule Region. To the south, you'll find San Carlos. And to the east, it borders San Fabian de Alico. The main town and capital of this commune is San Gregorio.
People and Population
How many people live in Ñiquén? According to a count done in 2002, called a census, Ñiquén has about 11,421 people. A census is like a big survey to count everyone living in an area.
The commune covers an area of about 493.1 square kilometers. Out of the total population, 5,886 were men and 5,535 were women. Most people, about 10,278 (90%), lived in rural areas. This means they lived in the countryside. Only 1,143 people (10%) lived in urban areas, which are towns or cities.
Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Ñiquén went down. It decreased by 13.2%, which means 1,735 fewer people lived there.
How Ñiquén is Governed
Who runs the commune of Ñiquén? Ñiquén is a commune, which is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. This council helps make decisions for the area.
The leader of the commune is called an alcalde. The alcalde is like a mayor. People vote directly for the alcalde every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Domingo Garrido Torres. He belonged to the PPD.
Ñiquén is also part of larger government groups. It has representatives in the Chamber of Deputies. These representatives help make laws for the whole country. It also has representatives in the Senate, which is another part of Chile's government.
