San Gregorio is a special area in the very south of Chile. It is called a commune and is part of the Magallanes Region and Province. The local government, called a municipality, is in Punta Delgada. This is the main town in the San Gregorio area.

This commune is located on the northern coast of the Strait of Magellan. To the south is the Strait, and to the north is the border with Argentina. There is a ferry crossing at a place called Primera Angostura. This ferry takes people and cars across to Tierra del Fuego Island. San Gregorio also has strong winds, which are great for a wind power project planned for 2025.

Historic Buildings and Shipwrecks

About 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Punta Delgada, you can find a place called Estancia San Gregorio. An estancia is a very large ranch. Here, you can see some impressive old buildings that were built way back in 1882.

Close by, there are also two old cargo ships that wrecked in the 1800s.

  • The Ambassador was a fast sailing ship called a tea clipper. It was built in London in 1869. It ended up beached at San Gregorio in 1896.
  • The Amadeo was a steamship built in Liverpool in 1884. It was beached at San Gregorio in 1932.

According to a count done in 2002, San Gregorio covers a huge area of 6,883.7 square kilometers (2,658 square miles). At that time, 1,158 people lived there. Most of the people were men (886) and fewer were women (272). This means San Gregorio is mostly a rural area, with no big cities.

The number of people living in San Gregorio went down by 29.5% between 1992 and 2002. Most of the people living here have family roots from Croatia, Spain, and other parts of Europe.

San Gregorio is a commune, which is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a group of people called a municipal council. The main leader of this council is an alcalde (mayor). The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years. The alcalde from 2012 to 2016 was Edgar Cárcamo Alderete.
