Łobez (pronounced 'wo-bez') is a town in northwestern Poland. It is located on the Rega river, within the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. Łobez is the main town of Łobez County. In 2019, about 10,066 people lived there.

What Does the Name Łobez Mean?
The name Łobez comes from an old Polish word. That word is łobuzie. It means "bushes" or "thickets." This suggests the area was once covered in dense plant life.
A Glimpse into Łobez's Past
Łobez has a long and interesting history. In the 12th century, it was a Slavic stronghold. This means it was a fortified settlement, like a small castle town. At that time, it was part of the Kingdom of Poland.
Later, Poland was divided into smaller areas called duchies. Łobez became part of the Duchy of Pomerania. This duchy was ruled by the Griffin family.
The town was first mentioned in a written record in 1271. This document showed that a knight named Borko owned the town. He was also a castellan, a kind of governor, of a nearby town called Kołobrzeg.
