About the Building
Height and Design
101 Collins Street is one of the tallest buildings in Australia. It measures 260 m (850 ft) to its highest point, which includes a 60 m (200 ft)-tall spire at the top. This makes it the 7th tallest building in Australia when measured this way.
The building is designed for offices and has a lot of space inside. It offers about 83,000 m2 (890,000 sq ft) of space that companies can rent.
Inside Features
The inside of 101 Collins Street has some special features:
- The height from the floor to the ceiling is quite large for a skyscraper, at 2.77 m (9 ft 1 in). This makes the offices feel more open and spacious.
- The building has 30 m (98 ft) lifts (elevators) that can move very quickly. They can reach speeds of 7 m/s (23 ft/s), which means people can get to their floors fast.
- There are 414 parking spots underground for cars.
- The windows are special too. They are double glazed, meaning they have two layers of glass. They also have a special coating. This design helps the building stay warm in winter and cool in summer, saving energy.
Before 101 Collins Street was built, an older building called the CRA Building was taken down to make space for it.
Protecting Views
The owners of 101 Collins Street have worked to make sure the building's great views are protected. They have bought nearby properties, especially to the south, to prevent other tall buildings from blocking the view. This has also led to some older buildings in the area becoming popular places for restaurants and bars.
Location and Transport
101 Collins Street is so well-known that a Yarra Trams stop is named after it. This tram stop is used by several tram routes in Melbourne, including Route 11, Route 12, Route 48, and Route 109. This makes it easy for people to get to and from the building using public transport.
