List of tallest buildings in Australia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts
Sydney skyline and harbour
Sydney has many tall buildings.
Melbourne skyline - cropped and contrast
Melbourne has the most skyscrapers over 150 meters tall.

Australia was one of the first countries to build skyscrapers, just like the United States and Canada. Melbourne had Australia's first tall building, the APA Building, finished in 1889. It was one of the tallest buildings in the world back then. Today, a building is called a skyscraper if it's taller than 150 meters (about 492 feet). Australia's first skyscraper by this modern definition was the Australia Square Tower in Sydney, built in 1967.

Most of Australia's very tall buildings are in the eastern states. These include Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. A few are also in Western Australia. Other states and territories have many high-rise buildings, but none are tall enough to be called skyscrapers.

Australia's Tallest Buildings

This list shows the tallest buildings in Australia that are at least 200 meters (about 656 feet) high. They are ranked by their official height. This height includes spires, which are part of the building's design. It does not include antennas or communication masts.

If two buildings have the same height, the one with more floors is listed first. The "Year" column shows when the building was finished. This list only includes buildings where people live or work. It does not include towers like observation decks or radio masts.

The Sydney Tower, finished in 1981, was the first structure in Australia to be over 300 meters (1,000 feet) tall. It stands at 309 meters (1,014 feet). However, it is not on this list because it only has four floors. Most of it is a communications and observation tower, not a skyscraper.
