The 1934 FIFA World Cup final was a super exciting football match! It was the second time the FIFA World Cup tournament was held. This big game decided who would be the champions of the 1934 World Cup.

The two teams playing were Italy and Czechoslovakia. They played on June 10, 1934, in Rome, Italy, at the Stadio Nazionale PNF. It was a very hot day, with temperatures almost reaching 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit)!

Czechoslovakia scored first, but Italy fought back. They won the match 2–1 after playing extra time. The last player from that final who was still alive was Czechoslovakia's goalkeeper, František Plánička. He passed away in 1996 when he was 92 years old.

Getting to the Final Match

This was the first time both Italy and Czechoslovakia had ever played in a World Cup final. Before this game, they had played each other ten times. Their last match was in Florence, Italy, where Italy won 2–0.

How Italy Reached the Final

Italy had to play some tough games to get to the final.

  • They beat the United States 7–1 in their first game.
  • Next, they played Spain. The first game was a 1–1 draw, so they had to play again. Italy won the replay 1–0.
  • In the semifinals, Italy played Austria and won 1–0.

How Czechoslovakia Reached the Final

Czechoslovakia also had a challenging path to the final.

  • They won their first game against Romania 2–1.
  • In the quarter-finals, they beat Switzerland 3–2.
  • Then, in the semifinals, they defeated Germany 3–1.

The Big Game: Italy vs. Czechoslovakia

The final match was full of drama! Both teams played their best to win the World Cup trophy.

Match Summary

The game was tied for a long time. Then, with only 19 minutes left in the regular game, Antonín Puč scored for Czechoslovakia! They were in the lead.

But Italy didn't give up. Just 10 minutes later, Italy's striker Raimundo Orsi scored a goal, making the score 1–1. The game was still tied when the regular 90 minutes ended.

Because the score was still tied, the game went into extra time. This was the very first time a World Cup final ever went into extra time! After five minutes of extra play, Angelo Schiavio scored another goal for Italy. This put Italy in the lead 2–1. Italy held onto their lead and won the game!
