What Are Elections?
An election is a way for people to choose their representatives. When you vote, you pick someone you think will do a good job. These representatives then make decisions for everyone. Elections happen at different levels of government.
Levels of Government in Canada
- Federal elections: These are for choosing members of the national government in Ottawa. They make laws for all of Canada.
- Provincial elections: These are for choosing members of the government in each province or territory. They make laws for their specific province, like Ontario or Quebec.
- Municipal elections: These are for choosing leaders in cities, towns, and local communities. They deal with local issues like parks, roads, and public services.
What is a By-Election?
Sometimes, an election happens outside of the regular schedule. This is called a by-election. It usually happens when a representative leaves their job early. A by-election is held to pick a new person for that specific spot.
