33 Arch Street is a tall, modern building in Boston, Massachusetts. It is located in the city's busy Financial District. This building was finished in 2004, after three years of construction. Work started on June 5, 2001.
Standing 477 feet (145 meters) tall, 33 Arch Street has 33 floors. It is one of Boston's tallest buildings, tied for 20th place with the State Street Bank Building. The building was designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects.
Building History
When builders first planned 33 Arch Street, they wanted a building made mostly of clear glass. However, people living near the historic Old South Meeting House did not like this idea. So, the plans were changed.
After the building was finished, it was hard to find companies to rent offices there. There were too many empty office spaces in Boston at the time. By 2005, about half of the office space was rented. Parking spaces in the building cost around $350 a month.
In 2010, 33 Arch Street earned a special award. It received the LEED Gold designation from the U.S. Green Building Council. This award means the building is very environmentally friendly. Later that year, it was named the "Outstanding Building of the Year" by BOMA.
Cool Features of the Building
33 Arch Street offers amazing views of Boston. You can see Boston Common, the Charles River, and Boston Harbor. The building has over 600,000 square feet (56,000 square meters) of office space. It also has a large underground parking garage with 850 parking spots.
How It Looks
The building has a special wing shape. This design helps it fit well into its spot in the city. The outside of the building uses gray granite stone. This helps it blend in with other buildings nearby. But it also stands out with lots of metal and glass.
The roof of 33 Arch Street is also unique. It has a curved top and special fins. This makes it look different from other flat-roofed buildings in the city skyline.
