33 South Sixth is a very tall building, also known as a skyscraper, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was designed by a famous architecture firm called Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. This building stands 52 stories high and reaches about 668 feet (204 meters) into the sky.

Its name, 33 South Sixth, comes from its address on South Sixth Street in Minneapolis. The building was finished in 1983. It was first built as the main office for International Multifoods Corporation. They stayed there until 1997, but the building kept its old name until 2003. Right next to the tower is the Minneapolis City Center shopping mall. This mall takes up the ground floor, the skyway level, and the third floor of the complex.

What is 33 South Sixth?

33 South Sixth Street is a 52-story office building. It is found right in the middle of Minneapolis's special skyway system. This system connects many buildings with enclosed walkways above the streets. Building work started in 1981, and the tower opened in 1983. It quickly became one of the tallest buildings in Minneapolis.

Who Works There?

Today, many different companies have offices in 33 South Sixth. Some of the current businesses include Target Corporation and law firms like Meagher & Geer and Stoel Rives. Each typical floor in the building is about 24,700 square feet (2,295 square meters). In total, there are about 1,170,000 square feet (108,690 square meters) of office space. The retail mall part has about 489,000 square feet (45,430 square meters) of space.

The City Center Mall

The Minneapolis City Center mall is connected to the building. It was updated in 2005. This mall has five connections to the skyway system. It also includes the Minneapolis Marriott at City Center, which is a large hotel with 583 rooms. There is also a parking garage with space for 687 cars.

The mall has several main stores, including Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth, Marshalls, and Fogo de Chao. You can also find many other national stores and restaurants there. These include Brooks Brothers, Allen Edmonds, GNC, UPS, Leeann Chin, and Naf Naf. There are also local shops like Len, which sells fashion, and Pacifier, which sells baby clothes and toys.

Building Design and Look

The outside of 33 South Sixth is covered with light brown concrete panels. The east and west sides of the building have four wide sections. These sections are separated by pillars that go all the way up. Each wide section is then divided into three smaller parts, each with a square window.

The north and south sides have seven sections. The five sections in the middle are wider and have dark-tinted glass windows. These windows are set in dark frames. The concrete panels also cover the retail part of the building. Some people think this makes the building look a bit heavy. An architecture critic named Larry Millett once called it a "big architectural oaf." He also said the concrete panels were "designed... to achieve maximum unattractiveness."

The design of this tower is quite similar to another building called One HSBC Center in Buffalo.
