The End of the Persian Wars
In 479 BC, the long and difficult Persian Wars finally came to an end. This was a major turning point for the ancient world. The Greeks, despite being smaller and often divided, managed to defeat the mighty Persian army and navy. This victory secured the independence of the Greek city-states.
Key Battles of 479 BC
The end of the wars was marked by two very important battles:
- The Battle of Plataea was a major land battle. Here, a large army of Greek city-states, led by Sparta, faced off against the Persian land forces. The Greeks won a decisive victory, pushing the Persians out of mainland Greece.
- The Battle of Mycale happened around the same time. This was a naval battle and a land battle fought near the coast of Ionia. The Greek fleet destroyed the remaining Persian navy and army in the region. These two victories effectively ended the Persian threat to Greece.
Important People Who Died
- Confucius (born 551 BC) was a very famous Chinese philosopher and teacher. He lived many years before 479 BC but his ideas continued to influence people for centuries. Confucius taught about how people should live their lives, how families should behave, and how governments should rule fairly. His teachings are known as Confucianism and are still studied today.
