5, Rue Sésame is a fun French language TV show made for children. It's based on the super popular American show Sesame Street. This French version was shown on France 5. It was the second time Sesame Workshop (the creators of Sesame Street) made a show just for France! The first one was called 1, rue Sésame.

The show created 75 episodes, each about 26 minutes long. These episodes were made for two seasons. François Basset and Jul Mallard directed the series. Expand-Drama produced the show for France 5, working with Sesame Workshop. The show first aired daily, from Sunday to Friday mornings. It also had special times on Saturdays.

Characters of 5, Rue Sésame

Most of the characters in 5, Rue Sésame were created just for this show. They are a mix of puppets and human actors.

Muppet Friends

  • Nac (played by Régis Fassier) – Nac is a very tall monster, about 2.2 meters (over 7 feet) tall! He is kind, happy, and always ready to help. Nac is like the main friendly face of the show.
  • Griotte (played by Evelyne Scheigam) – Griotte is a purple puppet girl. She uses a wheelchair but loves to join in all the fun activities on the street. Her name means "Morello cherry" in French.
  • Yoyo (played by Yves Brunier) – Yoyo is a monster who can get scared or worried easily. But he has a very kind heart, and everyone loves him for his sweet nature.
  • Olive (played by Charlie Bazire) – Olive is a green, furry monster. She is a bit mischievous, brave, and always full of giggles and big smiles.
  • Elmo (played by Christophe Albertini) – Elmo is a famous character who came from the original American Sesame Street. He is the youngest character on the show, only three and a half years old.
  • Georges (played by Richard Sandra) – Georges is a friendly penguin. He arrived on Rue Sésame inside a big ice cube! He quickly became good friends with everyone living on the street.

Human Neighbors

  • Titouan (played by Florent Moriniere) – Titouan is a retired man. He is seen as a very modern and caring dad figure on the street.
  • Baya (played by Myriam Loucif) – Baya is the baker on the street. Her happy mood and generosity make everyone feel good and confident.
  • Juliette (played by Chloe Stefanni) – Juliette is a young student. She works at the newsstand on the street, helping everyone get their papers and magazines.

Season 1 Highlights

The first season of 5, Rue Sésame followed the same style as the original Sesame Street. It had a main story that continued through four parts of each episode.

This season featured 20 different songs. Ten of these songs were made especially for 5, Rue Sésame. The music was created by Madeleine Going, and the words were written by D’Alexandra Pic.

Each episode also included special short segments:

  • A 1:30 minute part teaching French Sign Language.
  • Exercise segments filmed in different parts of France.
  • Le monde de Nac (Nac's World), which showed international films from the American Global Grover series.
  • La lettre du jour (Letter of the Day) with Cookie Monster and Prairie Dawn. These were dubbed into French.
  • Le chiffre du jour (Number of the Day) with Comte von Compte (Count von Count), also dubbed into French.
