New Rulers Take Power
In 986, some new leaders came to power in different parts of the world.
- On March 2, a new king named Louis V started ruling the Franks. The Franks were a powerful group of people in what is now France. He was known as the "Do-Nothing King" because his rule was very short and not much happened.
- In Japan, Emperor Kazan stopped being the emperor. An emperor is like a king or queen, but for an empire.
- Right after, Emperor Ichijō became the new emperor of Japan. He was very young when he took the throne.
- In Denmark, a strong leader named Sweyn Forkbeard became the new king. He would later become a very famous Viking king.
Exploring New Lands
- An explorer named Bjarni Herjólfsson was sailing from Iceland to Greenland. He got lost in a storm and saw land that no one from Europe (which people sometimes called the "Old World") had seen before. This land was actually North America! He was the first European to see it, even before Leif Erikson.
Big Battles in Asia
- The Song Dynasty in China sent armies to fight against the Liao Dynasty. The Song armies attacked from three different directions to try and take back an area called the Sixteen Prefectures. However, the Liao Dynasty was very strong, and the Song armies were defeated in all their attacks.
