The Story of Casale Football Club
Casale Football Club was started in 1909. At that time, Casale was right in the middle of where football was becoming popular in Italy. Many famous clubs like Genoa, Pro Vercelli, Milan, Torino, and Juventus were already big. Casale quickly joined these top teams.
Making History: Beating an English Team
In May 1913, Casale made history! They became the first Italian club to beat a professional English team. They won 2–1 against Reading F.C.. This was a huge deal because Reading had won all their other games in Italy. They had even beaten the Italian national team!
Winning the National Title
The very next season, Casale won their first and only national championship. Back then, Italian football was organized by regions. The championship had three parts. Casale finished first in their Ligurian-Piedmontese division. Then, they played against other top northern teams like Inter Milan and Juventus.
After winning that northern division, Casale played against Lazio, the champions from central-southern Italy. Casale won the final with scores of 7–1 and 0–2 over two games. This made them the national champions!
Later Years and Challenges
After World War I, Casale stayed in the top football division for about 20 years. However, as football became more professional, Casale slowly moved down to lower leagues. Their last year in Serie A (Italy's top league) was 1934.
The club faced money problems and had to be restarted twice. This happened in 1993 and again in 2013. In 2013, they took their current name, Casale Foot Ball Club. Fans of Casale have a strong rivalry with the fans of Alessandria.
Famous Players of Casale
Many talented players have worn the black and white jersey of Casale.
National Team Stars
Five players from the team that won the 1913–14 championship also played for the Italy national football team. They all made their first international appearances between 1912 and 1914. These players were:
- Luigi Barbesino
- Giovanni Gallina
- Angelo Mattea
- Giuseppe Parodi
- Amedeo Varese
Umberto Caligaris: A Club Legend
One of Casale's biggest stars was Umberto Caligaris. He was a defender who played for the club from 1919 to 1928. While playing for Casale, he played 37 games for the Italian national team. He even played in the 1924 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal at the 1928 Summer Olympics.
After leaving Casale, he joined Juventus. Caligaris held the record for most games played for the Italian national team (59 caps) for about 40 years!
Other Notable Players
Eraldo Monzeglio also started his career with Casale. He made his Serie A debut with the club in 1923–24. He later played for Italy many times, including in the 1934 and 1938 World Cups. After one season, he moved to Bologna.
Piero Operto, a left back who played for the famous Grande Torino team, also played for Casale from 1946 to 1948. Sadly, he passed away in the Superga air disaster.
