AMSOIL Arena is a modern sports and event center located in Duluth, Minnesota. It is the proud home of the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) men's and women's hockey teams. The arena first opened its doors in 2010. It replaced the older Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC) Arena. You can find it right on the waterfront, close to Duluth's famous Aerial Lift Bridge.
A company called AMSOIL bought the rights to name the arena for 20 years. They paid $6 million for this honor. The arena cost almost $80 million to build. About half of the money came from the State of Minnesota. The city of Duluth helped by using money from a special food and beverage tax. The University of Minnesota-Duluth and the DECC also contributed to the building costs. Construction began in September 2008 and finished in December 2010. The project also included a large parking garage with a special walkway connecting it to the arena.
The very first event at AMSOIL Arena was on December 30, 2010. The UMD men's hockey team played against North Dakota. Even though UMD lost, a large crowd of 6,764 fans came to watch. In their first season playing in the new arena, the UMD men's hockey team won the national championship! The arena also hosted the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey Tournament in 2012.
The biggest crowd ever at AMSOIL Arena was 8,372 people. This happened on June 20, 2018, during a rally held by President Donald Trump. For a sporting event, the record attendance was 7,711 fans. This was on January 25, 2020, when the UMD men's hockey team played their rivals from North Dakota.
