Club Career Highlights
Aaron Hunt was born in Goslar, a town in Germany. He started his football journey in the youth teams before joining Werder Bremen.
Playing for Werder Bremen
Hunt first played for Werder Bremen's reserve team. He made his debut in the Bundesliga on September 18, 2004. He came on as a substitute in a 3–0 win against Hannover 96.
In his first game as a starter, on February 12, 2005, he scored his first goal. This made him the youngest player ever to score for the club. He was 18 years and 161 days old.
In early 2006, Hunt had a knee injury. He missed the rest of the 2005–06 season. Later, in November, he signed a new contract until 2010. On March 3, 2007, he scored three goals in one game, a hat-trick, against VfL Bochum. He ended that season with nine goals. His team finished third in the league.
In the 2012–13 season, Hunt scored his personal best of 11 goals. However, Werder Bremen only finished 14th that year. In March 2014, during a match, he was awarded a penalty. But he told the referee to change the decision because the opposing player had not touched him. This showed his great sportsmanship.
Time at VfL Wolfsburg
On May 26, 2014, Hunt joined VfL Wolfsburg. He played his first game for them on August 17 in the DFB-Pokal cup. They won after a penalty shoot-out. His first league game was five days later against Bayern Munich.
Hunt scored his first goal for Wolfsburg on September 21, 2014. It was in a 4–1 win against Bayer Leverkusen. He also played in the UEFA Europa League, a big European competition. He scored two goals in a 5–1 win against Krasnodar. He finished the 2014–15 season with four goals in 22 games.
Moving to Hamburger SV
On August 31, 2015, Hunt joined Hamburger SV. He had already played two matches for Wolfsburg that season. In his first year at Hamburger SV, he scored one goal in 21 matches. The next season, he scored four goals in 26 games.
In the 2017–18 season, Hunt played 30 games and scored three goals. However, the club was relegated to the 2. Bundesliga for the first time in its history. After this, he was made the new team captain.
Aaron Hunt announced his retirement in February 2022. He was 35 years old. He played over 400 league matches in Germany's top football divisions.
International Career
Aaron Hunt could have played for either Germany or England. This was because his father was German and his mother was English. His mother's family came from London.
However, Hunt decided he would only play for the country where he was born, Germany. He said he was "honoured" to be considered by England, but his decision to play for Germany was firm.
He played for the German under-21 team in October 2006. His third and final game for the senior German national team was a friendly match against Ecuador in May 2013. Germany won that game 4-2.
