Abbas Vaez Tabasi (Persian: عباس واعظ طبسی) was an important religious leader in Iran. He was born on June 25, 1935, and passed away on March 4, 2016.
He was in charge of the Astan Quds Razavi organization for a long time. This organization manages the holy shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad. He led it from 1979 until he passed away in 2016.

Early Life and Education
Abbas Vaez Tabasi was born in Tabas, Iran. His family was from Mashhad.
He started his religious education when he was just 12 years old. He studied at different religious schools, called seminaries.
His Career and Roles
Vaez Tabasi held many important positions in Iran. He was a member of the central council of the Islamic Republican Party. This was a major political group.
He also served on the Expediency Discernment Council. This council helps solve disagreements between different parts of the government. He was also a member of the Assembly of Experts. This group chooses and oversees the Supreme Leader.
His most well-known role was leading the Astan Quds Razavi. This organization manages the shrine of Imam Reza, which is a very important religious site.
In 2006, he was chosen to be a member of the Assembly of Experts. He served there until 2016, when he decided not to run for re-election.
Family Life
Abbas Vaez Tabasi's daughter married Sayyid Hassan. Sayyid Hassan is the son of Ali Khamenei, who is the current Supreme Leader of Iran.
Later Years and Passing
In November 2015, it was announced that Vaez Tabasi was sick with cancer. On February 27, 2016, he went to the hospital because he had trouble breathing.
He passed away a few days later, on March 4, 2016, at the age of 80. After his death, the province of Khorasan declared three days of mourning.
His funeral was held the next day. Many important officials attended, including Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani. He was buried at the Imam Reza shrine, a very holy place.
His Activities Before the Revolution
Vaez Tabasi was an important figure in the events leading up to the Iranian Revolution. He worked with other religious leaders like Ali Khamenei. They focused their activities around the holy shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad.
He was inspired by Navvab Safavi in the 1950s. He gave speeches against the government at that time, the Pahlavi dynasty. His speeches were sometimes banned, but he continued until the Pahlavi government fell.
He was arrested for the first time in 1952. He was held in a prison run by SAVAK, the government's security agency.
In 1955, he was invited to give a speech in Rafsanjan. After this speech, he was again banned from speaking publicly.
