Fun Things to Do
The Abbyville Rodeo
Abbyville is famous for its yearly Frontier Days PRCA Rodeo and BBQ. This exciting event happens every May. You can watch barrel racing, bull riding, calf roping, and more! It's a big deal because it's now a PRCA sanctioned event.
The rodeo was started by Clifford "Pinky" Busick in 1961. The very first rodeo was a celebration for Kansas's 100th birthday. It had fun things like a bonnet contest, a beard contest, and a carnival. The musical Oklahoma! was even performed! Everyone loved it so much that Pinky decided to make it an annual event.
The rodeo has been held every year since 1963. People from Abbyville and nearby towns help run everything. Many old traditions are still part of the rodeo today. These include a Saturday morning parade and a delicious ham and chicken noodle lunch. There's also a BBQ dinner with fresh pie. During the parade, two young children are crowned "Miss Little Britches" and "Uncle Sam."
Even though Abbyville is a small town, the rodeo keeps it well-known. The band Hollerado even filmed their music video for "Good Day at the Races" at the Abbyville rodeo grounds!
