Abdirahman Jama Barre (born 1937 – died August 15, 2017) was an important Somali politician. He served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Somali Democratic Republic two times. He also held the position of Minister of Finance. Later, he became the 1st Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia.
Early Life and Education
Abdirahman Jama Barre was born in 1937. His birthplace was Luuq, a town in what was then Italian Somaliland. He belonged to the Marehan Darod clan. He was also a cousin of Mohamed Siad Barre, who was a former President of Somalia.
Abdirahman went to college in another country. In the early 1960s, he earned a PhD from the University of Padua in Padua, Italy. After finishing his studies, he got married and had 15 children. He also enjoyed playing lawn tennis.
Political Career
After graduating from university, Jama Barre started his career. For a short time, he worked as a headmaster.
In 1960, Jama Barre joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This was part of Somalia's first civilian government. He received his first job as a diplomat that same year. He worked as a counsellor until 1964.
He was then promoted to lead two departments. He became the Director of the Economic and Social Department. He also became the Director-General of the Social Department. He held these roles for four years. From 1969 to 1970, he was the Acting Director-General for both departments.
In 1970, after a peaceful change in government, Jama Barre was named Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This was by the new government, the Supreme Revolutionary Council (SRC). In 1976, he joined the Somali Revolutionary Socialist Party (SSRP). He was a member of their Central Committee.
In July 1977, Jama Barre became the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In this role, he represented the Somali Democratic Republic at the United Nations General Assembly.
In 1986, he joined a special committee. This committee was made up of seven people from Somalia and Ethiopia. He worked with Goshu Wolde, who was Ethiopia's Foreign Minister at the time.
Towards the end of 1987, Jama Barre became the 1st Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia. He worked alongside Abdiqassim Salad Hassan, who was the 2nd Deputy Prime Minister. At the same time, Jama Barre was also named Minister of Finance and Treasury.
In 1989, he was again made Foreign Minister. His second time in this role lasted for one year. He kept his jobs as 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister until January 1991. This was when the central government of Somalia ended.
Jama Barre was also part of a government group called Suhl, which means "reconciliation." Abdiqassim Salad Hassan, who later became President of Somalia, helped start this group.
In 2004, a new government was formed, called the Transitional Federal Government. Jama Barre decided to run for President of Somalia. However, he did not win. The election was won by Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, who was then the President of the Puntland region.
