Abid Hussain (December 26, 1926 – June 21, 2012) was an important Indian economist, government official, and diplomat. He served as India's ambassador to the United States from 1990 to 1992. He was also a member of India's Planning Commission from 1985 to 1990. In this role, he helped plan for India's future development.

About His Life
Abid Hussain was married to Trilok Karki, who was an author. They had three children: Suhail Hasan, Vishaka Hussain, and Rana Hasan. His brother, Irshad Panjatan, is a well-known actor. Abid Hussain grew up in his hometown of Hyderabad, India. He studied at the Nizam College in 1942.
His Work and Achievements
Serving His Country
Abid Hussain held many important roles for India. From 1990 to 1992, he was India's ambassador to the United States. This meant he represented India and worked to build good relationships with the U.S. He also worked as a secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Heavy Industry. He was part of the Indian Administrative Service, which is a group of top government officials.
From 1985 to 1990, he was a member of India's Planning Commission. This group makes plans for the country's economic and social development.
Helping India's Economy
In 1988, Abid Hussain received the Padma Bhushan award. This is one of India's highest civilian honors, given for excellent service to the nation. He was a key leader in making big changes to India's economy and trade rules starting in the 1980s.
He led six important committees set up by the Indian government. These committees looked at different areas, such as:
- Trade Policy Reforms (how India trades with other countries)
- Project Exports (helping Indian companies work on projects abroad)
- Science and Technology Development
- Textile Policy (rules for the clothing industry)
- Capital Market Development (how money is invested in businesses)
- Small Scale Industry (helping small businesses grow)
Two of his reports, the Abid Hussain Committee Report on Trade Policy Reform and the Abid Hussain Committee Report on Small Scale Industries, were very important. They helped guide India's economic changes.
Other Important Roles
Abid Hussain was involved with many organizations. He was president of Katha, an organization that promotes literature. He also chaired the Research Council of the National Institute of Science, Technology & Development Studies. He was part of the India-China Economic & Cultural Council.
He served as a special expert for the United Nations for nine years. In this role, he focused on the freedom of opinion and expression around the world. He was also a member of the Constitution Review Commission, which looked at India's constitution.
Earlier in his career, he worked as a UN adviser in Turkey on community development. He also led industrial, technology, and environment programs at the UN Regional Commission of ESCAP in Bangkok for seven years. He was the vice-chairman of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and chancellor of the Central University in Hyderabad.
Abid Hussain was an active member of society. He often shared his ideas on important topics like globalisation (how countries become more connected), Internet censorship, gender issues, and freedom of expression.
Abid Hussain passed away on June 21, 2012, in London due to a heart attack. At the time of his death, he was still serving in several important positions. These included chancellor of the English and Foreign Languages University in Hyderabad and professor emeritus at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.
Awards
Abid Hussain was honored with the Padma Bhushan award in 1988. This award recognized his excellent service to India.
