Abu Talib (born around 535, died around 619) was an important leader of the Banu Hashim clan. This clan was part of the powerful Quraysh tribe in the city of Mecca, located in the Arabian Peninsula. He became the leader after his father, Abd al-Muttalib, passed away. Abu Talib was also in charge of important duties like providing water (Siqaya) and food (Rifada) to pilgrims visiting Mecca. Even though he wasn't very wealthy, he was highly respected by everyone in Mecca.

Abu Talib was the uncle of Muhammad, who is known as the Prophet of Islam. He was also the father of Ali, a very important figure in Islamic history. Ali later became a leader known as a Caliph, and many also consider him the first Imam for Shia Muslims. There is some discussion among Islamic scholars about whether Abu Talib became a Muslim before he died.

Abu Talib passed away around 619 CE, when he was over 80 years old. This was about 10 years after Muhammad began his mission as a prophet. This year is known as the Year of Sorrow for Muhammad. This is because not only did his uncle Abu Talib die, but also his wife, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, within a month of Abu Talib.
