Acacia's photos have been in National Geographic magazine. Her work is also kept in important museums like the Smithsonian and the Anchorage Museum.
About Acacia Johnson
Acacia Johnson was born in Anchorage, Alaska in 1990. When she was a child, she loved watching wild animals. She especially liked to follow grizzly bears.
Starting Photography
In 2008, Acacia went to Norway as an exchange student. She studied at Narvik Upper Secondary School in Narvik. The year she spent there changed her life. She took a class about media and communications. She also saw the amazing light in the Arctic Circle. This experience made her want to become a photographer. After a few years in Norway, she came back to the United States. She then studied photography at the Rhode Island School of Design.
Exploring the Polar Regions
Acacia became very good at taking photos in cold, polar places. Because of her talent, she won a special award called a Fulbright Scholarship. This award took her to Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. There, she was able to study the local people in an Inuit village. Her work helps people learn about these unique communities.
Acacia explains why she loves photography: "Both my grandfather and my father took pictures all the time. I got my first camera when I was nine. I have always been artistic but I think the reason I chose photography was because it is not only a form of artistic expression, it also offers a means of engaging with the world". This means photography helps her show her artistic side and also connect with the world around her.
Current Work
Since October 2019, Acacia Johnson has lived in Charlottesville, Virginia. She is studying creative writing at the University of Virginia. She wants to improve her writing and photography skills. She hopes to create either fiction stories or photo books with descriptive essays.
