A Look Back in Time
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. This count showed that Aceitunas barrio had a population of 1,067 people at that time.

When the River Rose
In May 2019, Aceitunas and several other areas in different towns experienced heavy flooding. This happened when the Culebrinas River overflowed its banks.
The flooding caused many problems. Trees were knocked down, and landslides occurred. Landslides are when a lot of earth and rocks slide down a hill. Some highways also had to be closed because of the water and debris.
