Acharya Shivpujan Sahay (born August 9, 1893 – died January 21, 1963) was a very famous Indian writer. He wrote in both Hindi and Bhojpuri languages. He was known for his novels, essays, and for being a great editor.

Shivpujan Sahay helped start new ways of writing in Hindi fiction. One of his most well-known stories, "Mata ka Anchal" (which means "Mother's Lap"), is even taught in school books. This story beautifully shows the special bond between a child and their mother. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan award, which is a very high civilian award.

About His Life

Shivpujan Sahay was born in a village called Unwans in the Buxar District. This was on August 9, 1893. His family owned land. When he was a child, people called him 'Bholanath'.

His Education and Work

Shivpujan Sahay first went to school and then taught Hindi in a town called Ara from 1903 to 1921. After that, he moved to Kolkata to work as an editor for a magazine called 'Marwari Sudhar'. In 1923, he joined another magazine, Matwala, as an editor.

In 1924, he moved to Lucknow. There, he worked for a magazine called Madhuri. He got to work with another famous Hindi writer, Munshi Premchand. Shivpujan Sahay helped edit Premchand's novel Rangbhumi and some of his other stories.

He went back to Calcutta in 1925 and worked on several short-lived magazines. Later, in 1926, Sahay moved to Varanasi to work as a freelance editor. For a short time in 1931, he edited a magazine called Ganga. But he returned to Varanasi in 1932. There, he was asked to edit Jagaran, a literary magazine started by Jaishankar Prasad and his friends. He worked with Premchand again during this time. He also became an important member of the Nagari Pracharini Sabha, a group that promoted the Hindi language.

In 1935, he moved with his family to Darbhanga. He worked there as an editor for Balak and other books published by Pustak Bhandar. In 1939, he became a Professor of Hindi Language at Rajendra College in Chhapra. In 1946, he took a year off and moved to Patna to edit Himalaya, another literary magazine.

Finally, in 1950, Sahay settled in Patna. He became the Secretary of the Bihar Rashtra Bhasha Parished, which was a government group for language. He edited and published more than 50 Hindi reference books there. Later, he became the Director of the Parishad. He also put together and edited Hindi Sahitya Aur Bihar, which was a history of Hindi literature. He retired in 1959.

His own writings were collected and published in four books called Shipujan Rachanavali between 1956 and 1959. After he passed away, his son, Prof. Mangal Murty, edited and published all his complete works in 10 books in 2011. Shivpujan Sahay is also remembered for editing many special books that honored other writers and important people. He even edited Dr. Rajendra Prasad's Atmakatha (autobiography). He received the Padma Bhushan award in 1960 for his great contributions.
