Exploring Casco Township's Communities
Casco Township is home to four smaller communities. These are called unincorporated communities, which means they are not separate towns or cities but are part of the larger township.
Adair: A Historic Stop
- Adair is found in the northeast part of the township. People started settling here around 1840. It was once a stop on the Michigan Central Railway. An English contractor who built that part of the railway gave it its name.
Casco: The Township's Namesake
- Casco is an unincorporated community in the south-central part of the township. The first European settlers arrived here before 1840. The township itself was named after Casco, Maine. This name was likely chosen by Captain John Clarke, who came from Maine. A post office served this community from 1854 until 1907.
Muttonville: A Sheep Raising Center
- Muttonville is located on the western edge of the township, right next to Richmond in Macomb County. It got its name because it was the main place where sheep were processed. This area was mostly known for raising sheep.
Peters: Named After an Early Settler
- Peters is an unincorporated community in the southeast part of the township. It was first called "Petersburg" after an early settler named John Peters. However, because there was another Petersburg in Michigan, the post office here was simply named "Peters." It operated from 1891 until 1905.
