Adalbert (German: Albrecht, born around 985 – died May 26, 1055) was an important ruler. He was known as Adalbert the Victorious (German: Albrecht der Siegreiche). He served as the Margrave of Austria from 1018 until his death in 1055. Adalbert was a member of the powerful House of Babenberg family.
Adalbert's Life Story
Adalbert the Victorious was the third son of Leopold the Illustrious. His mother was Richardis of Sualafeldgau. He became Margrave after his older brother, Henry I, Margrave of Austria, passed away.
As Margrave, Adalbert worked to expand the borders of Austria. He pushed the eastern edge of the Ostmark of Bavaria (an early name for Austria) further east. This expansion reached the Morava/March and Leitha rivers.
Adalbert also supported King Henry III in his conflicts. He helped the King in battles against both Hungary and Bohemia. Adalbert lived in the Lower Austrian Babenberg castle of Melk. This is the same place where Melk Abbey would later be built.
Adalbert's Family Life
Adalbert first married a woman named Glismod of West-Saxony. They did not have any known children together.
Later, he married Frozza Orseolo. She later changed her name to Adelheid. Frozza was the sister of Peter Urseolo of Hungary. Frozza and Adalbert had one child, a son named Ernest. Ernest later became the Margrave of Austria, just like his father.
