Adam Paine (born 1843 – died January 1, 1877) was a brave Black Seminole man who served as a scout for the United States Army. He earned America's highest military award, the Medal of Honor, for his courageous actions during the American Indian Wars in the western United States.
Biography
Adam Paine joined the Army in November 1873 at Fort Duncan, Texas. He became part of a special group of scouts known as the "Seminole-Negro Indian Scouts". These scouts were very skilled at tracking and understanding the land.
His Medal of Honor Actions
On September 4, 1874, Private Paine and three other scouts were ahead of a main Army group. They were ambushed by twenty-five Comanche warriors. Paine bravely fought off the attackers. He even knocked down a leading Comanche horse with his rifle. All four scouts managed to escape and return to their camp safely.
Later, from September 26 to September 27, 1874, Paine took part in the Battle of Palo Duro Canyon. This battle happened near a river called the Red River. Paine was a great help to Colonel R. S. Mackenzie during this fight. The scouts tracked the Comanches to their camp hidden in Palo Duro Canyon.
The Army surprised the Comanches and captured or destroyed many of their horses and supplies. This was important because winter was coming. Colonel Mackenzie suggested that Paine and seven other soldiers should receive the Medal of Honor. About a year later, on October 13, 1875, Private Paine was given the Medal of Honor for his bravery at Palo Duro Canyon.
His Death
Adam Paine died on New Year's Day in 1877. He was involved in a conflict with a deputy sheriff named Claron A. Windus in Brackettville, Texas. Paine was 33 or 34 years old when he died. He was buried at the Seminole Indian Scout Cemetery in Brackettville, Texas.
