Addison Hiatt Sanders (born September 13, 1823 – died November 7, 1912) was an important person who started as a newspaper editor. He joined the Union Army during the American Civil War. He became a high-ranking officer, a Brigadier General, before the war ended. After the war, he worked as the Secretary of the Montana Territory.

About Addison Hiatt Sanders
Early Life and Career
Addison Sanders was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He went to Woodward College. In 1848, he bought a newspaper called the Evansville Journal. He worked as its publisher until 1856. Later, he moved to Davenport, Iowa. Before the Civil War began, he was the editor of the Davenport Gazette newspaper.
Military Service in the Civil War
On March 24, 1862, Sanders became a Lieutenant Colonel. He joined the 16th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. In October 1862, he was hurt in a battle at Corinth, Mississippi. He was then put in charge of Camp McClellan in Davenport.
On July 22, 1864, he was captured by the Confederates near Atlanta. Luckily, he was later set free in a prisoner exchange. On March 13, 1865, he was given the special rank of Brevet Brigadier General. This was an honorary rank for his brave service. He left the army on April 27, 1865.
Life After the War
After the war, Sanders went back to Davenport. He became the postmaster there. From July 1870 to January 1871, he served as the Secretary of the Montana Territory. Addison Sanders passed away in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Davenport.
