Adriano José Alves Moreira (6 September 1922 – 23 October 2022) was an important Portuguese lawyer, professor, and political leader. He played a big role in Portugal's history during the second half of the 20th century.

Who Was Adriano Moreira?
Adriano Moreira was a very influential person in Portugal. He was known for his work as a lawyer and a university professor. He also held many important positions in the Portuguese government and political parties.
Early Life and Learning
Adriano Moreira was born in Macedo de Cavaleiros, a town in Northern Portugal. He studied Law at the University of Lisbon and finished his degree in 1944. Later, he earned a special advanced degree (a doctorate) from a university in Madrid, Spain.
In his early years, Adriano Moreira supported groups that wanted more democracy in Portugal. He even signed a list for the Movement of Democratic Unity in 1945. He also worked as a lawyer for a general whose family faced difficulties with the government.
A Career in Politics
Over time, Moreira became part of the Estado Novo government, which was the ruling system in Portugal at that time. He was chosen to be the Minister for Overseas Territories. This meant he was in charge of Portugal's territories outside of Europe.
Helping Overseas Territories
During his two years as Minister (1961–1963), he made many new laws. He also helped create two important universities in Africa: one in Mozambique and another in Angola. These universities helped many students get a higher education.
After the Carnation Revolution
In 1974, there was a big change in Portugal called the Carnation Revolution. After this, Moreira lived in Brazil for a couple of years. When he returned, he became a key figure in the CDS – People's Party, a conservative political party.
He was the president of this party from 1986 to 1988. He also served as a member of the Portuguese Parliament (called the Assembly of the Republic) for many years, from 1980 to 1995. From 1991 to 1995, he was even the Vice-President of the Assembly.
Besides his political work, he was a professor at the Technical University of Lisbon. He also wrote several books about politics and international relations.
Later Years and Legacy
Adriano Moreira was married to Mónica Isabel Maia de Lima Mayer. They had six children together. One of his daughters, Isabel Moreira, also became a member of the Assembly of the Republic, representing a different political party.
Even after he retired from active politics, Adriano Moreira remained an important voice in Portugal. In 2015, he was chosen to be a member of the Portuguese Council of State. This is a group of important people who advise the President of Portugal.
Adriano Moreira lived a very long life. He turned 100 years old on 6 September 2022. He passed away on 23 October 2022, becoming the longest-living politician in Portugal's democratic history.
