Affligem is a town in Belgium. It is located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) west of Brussels. This town is part of the Flemish Brabant province. Affligem is also near the city of Aalst. It is found in a region known as the Pajottenland.
The municipality of Affligem is made up of three villages. These villages are Essene, Hekelgem, and Teralfene. There is no village specifically called Affligem. As of January 1, 2006, about 11,956 people lived there. The total area of Affligem is 17.70 square kilometers (6.83 square miles). This means about 676 people live in each square kilometer.
Historical Buildings in Affligem
Affligem is famous for its old buildings. The most well-known is the Affligem Abbey. This abbey was founded in 1062. It belongs to the Benedictine monks.
Another important building is St Michael's church, Hekelgem. This church is located in the village of Hekelgem.
Affligem Abbey and Its Beers
The abbey of Affligem started making beer around 1074. This makes it one of the oldest breweries in Belgium. The year "1074" is often seen on Affligem beer bottles. This shows how long the abbey has been connected to brewing.
Today, the beer brand "Affligem" uses the abbey's name. The monks of Affligem allow this use. The beer is brewed by the Op-Ale brewery. This brewery is in the nearby village of Opwijk. The company Heineken International now owns this brewery. They have renamed it the Affligem brewery. They sell Affligem beers all over the world.
