Afton is a small city located in Union County, Iowa. In 2020, about 874 people lived there.

A long time ago, in 1880, Afton was much bigger. It had 1,231 residents! Many people from Europe and the eastern United States moved here. They came to farm the land. Over time, farming changed, and fewer people were needed. This caused the population to become smaller.

History

Afton was first planned out in 1854. It got its name from a famous poem called "Sweet Afton" by Robert Burns. Afton officially became a city on November 30, 1868.

Afton is located in the state of Iowa. The city covers a total area of about 2.60 square kilometers (1.01 square miles). All of this area is land, with no water.
