Agness is a small community in Curry County, Oregon, United States. It's not an official city, but rather an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does.

Agness is special because it's located near where two amazing rivers meet. These are the Lower Rogue and the Illinois. Both are known as "Wild and Scenic" rivers, meaning they are protected for their natural beauty.

The Agness post office first opened on October 16, 1897. The community was named after Agnes, who was the daughter of the very first postmaster. Interestingly, her name was misspelled when the town was officially named! The Agness area is a popular spot for people who love to go fishing and hiking. It's also located within the Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest.

Unique Mail Boat Service

Agness is served by something very unique: one of only two rural mail boat routes still operating in the United States. The other one is in eastern Oregon along the Snake River. This special mail boat travels along the Rogue River, carrying mail and supplies between Gold Beach and Agness. It's a cool way to get mail!

Schools and Learning in Agness

Agness is part of the Central Curry School District. This district runs two schools: Riley Creek Elementary School and Gold Beach High School. All students in Curry County can attend Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Agness used to have its own small school for kindergarten through sixth grade. It was called a "one-room school," but it actually had two rooms. This school stayed open because Agness is quite far away from other towns. The road to Gold Beach, about 30 miles away, can be winding and sometimes tricky.

In 1969, the Agness school had only six students. The community worked hard to keep small schools like theirs open. By 2003, the school had a teacher, an aide, and four students. Older students from Agness would travel to Gold Beach for middle and high school.

Today, the old school building is used as the Agness Community Library. It's a great place for everyone in the community to read and learn.
