Synonyms

Agoseris glauca is a type of flowering plant found in North America. It belongs to the daisy family. People often call it pale agoseris, prairie agoseris, or short-beaked agoseris.

This plant grows naturally across western and northwestern North America. You can find it from Alaska all the way east to the Northwest Territories and Ontario. It also grows south into California, Arizona, and New Mexico. It likes to live in many different kinds of places.

What the Plant Looks Like

Agoseris glauca is a perennial herb. This means it lives for more than two years. Its look can change quite a bit.

Leaves and Stems

The plant grows a bunch of leaves at its base. These leaves can be different shapes. They can even be as tall as the plant itself!

This plant doesn't have a main stem like a tree. Instead, its flowers grow on a stem-like part called an inflorescence. This part usually stands straight up. It can grow to be about half a meter tall, or even taller.

Flowers and Seeds

The plant's flower head is usually one to three centimeters wide. It has many layers of pointed leaf-like parts called phyllaries.

The flower head is ligulate, which means it has many yellow ray florets. These look like petals. However, it does not have any disc florets, which are the small flowers usually found in the center of a daisy.

After the flower blooms, it produces a fruit called an achene. The main part of this fruit can be up to a centimeter long. It also has a fluffy part called a pappus, which can be almost two centimeters long. This pappus helps the seeds float away in the wind.

Different Types of Agoseris glauca

Scientists have found a few different types, or varieties, of Agoseris glauca:

  • Agoseris glauca var. dasycephala
  • Agoseris glauca var. glauca
