The Agriphila biarmicus is a type of moth. It belongs to the Crambidae family. A scientist named Johan Martin Jakob von Tengström first described it in 1865.
You can find this moth in several places. It lives in Fennoscandia and north-western Russia. It is also found in Estonia and Latvia. In Europe, it lives in the Alps mountains. This includes parts of Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. The moth also lives in Canada, in areas like Alberta and Quebec.
This moth has a wingspan of about 19 mm for one type, called paganella. Other types found in Europe are smaller. Their wingspan is usually 12–13 mm. The front wings are dark brown with patches. They have a lighter, whitish area in the middle. There is also a zig-zag line near the wing's edge. You can see a row of seven black dots along the very edge of the wings.
Different Kinds of Agriphila biarmicus
Just like some animals have different breeds, moths can have different types called subspecies. These are slightly different groups within the same species. They often live in different places.
Here are the known subspecies of Agriphila biarmicus:
- Agriphila biarmicus biarmicus: This type lives in Scandinavia and north-western Russia.
- Agriphila biarmicus illatella (Fuchs, 1902): This one is also found in Scandinavia.
- Agriphila biarmicus alpina (Bleszynski, 1957): You can find this subspecies in the Alps mountains.
- Agriphila biarmicus paganella (McDunnough, 1925): This type lives in North America.
