Agustín Rubín de Ceballos (born June 24, 1724 – died February 8, 1793) was an important Spanish church leader. He served as the Bishop of Jaén from 1780 to 1793. He was also the Grand Inquisitor of Spain from 1784 to 1793.
His Life and Work
Agustín Rubín de Ceballos was born in Dueñas, Palencia, Spain. His birthday was June 24, 1724. He chose to work for the Catholic Church. He became a canon, which is a type of priest, at Cuenca Cathedral.
In 1780, Charles III of Spain, the king at the time, chose him for a big role. Agustín became the Bishop of Jaén. A bishop is a high-ranking church official.
Later, in 1784, he was given an even more powerful position. He became the Grand Inquisitor of Spain. This role meant he was in charge of a special church court. This court aimed to protect the Catholic faith in Spain.
In 1790, a key political figure, José Moñino, 1st Count of Floridablanca, asked him for help. They wanted to control the spread of new ideas. These ideas were coming from the French Revolution. To do this, Agustín published a new Index of Prohibited Books. This was a list of books that people were not allowed to read. The goal was to stop certain thoughts from spreading in Spain.
Agustín Rubín de Ceballos passed away in Madrid on February 8, 1793. His body was later moved to Jaén, Spain. He was buried in the grand Jaén Cathedral.
