Agustín Javier Delgado Chalá (born December 23, 1974) is a famous Ecuadorian politician and former professional football player. People often called him El Tín. He played as a forward, which means he was usually trying to score goals.

Agustín Delgado was once the top scorer for the Ecuador national team. He scored 31 goals in 71 games. Later, another player named Enner Valencia scored more goals than him. Delgado played for many football clubs in Ecuador, Mexico, and England during his career.

Agustín Delgado's Football Journey

Starting His Career in Ecuador

Agustín Delgado began his football journey in Ecuador. He started playing for a team called ESPOLI in 1991. After that, he joined Barcelona SC in 1994.

He played there for one year and helped them win the Ecuadorian Serie A title in 1995. Then, he moved to El Nacional and won the Ecuadorian league title again. He even returned to Barcelona SC and won a third league title in a row!

Playing in Mexico

In 1998, Delgado went to Mexico. He had a short time playing for Cruz Azul. In 1999, he joined Necaxa, which was a champion team at the time.

He played for Necaxa in the 2000 FIFA Club World Championship. He scored goals in important games, including one against South Melbourne. He also scored in the third-place match against Real Madrid and helped his team win by scoring a penalty kick.

Time with Southampton in England

In late 2001, Delgado moved to England to play for Southampton. This was a big move to the Premier League. He had scored nine goals, helping Ecuador get into their first World Cup.

However, his time at Southampton was tough because of injuries. He had gotten an injury before the World Cup qualifiers. Even though Southampton tried to help him get better, he couldn't play many games. He even played in the 2002 World Cup while injured and taking painkillers. This made his injury worse and affected his future in Europe.

Despite his struggles, Delgado did score an important goal for Southampton. He scored the winning goal in a 3–2 game against Arsenal, who were champions at the time. He also scored a goal against Liverpool in a different competition.

Later Football Years

After leaving Southampton, Delgado went back to Ecuador. He played for Aucas and played very well. This good form led him to join a Mexican club called UNAM. He helped UNAM win their league championship.

In 2005, he returned to Barcelona SC. He played alongside his friend and teammate Iván Kaviedes. People thought they would lead the team to many wins, but it didn't quite happen as expected.

Delgado then joined L.D.U. Quito. Here, he started scoring lots of goals again. He helped his new team reach the quarterfinals of the 2006 Copa Libertadores, which was a big achievement. In 2008, he was part of the team that won the Copa Libertadores, a very important South American club championship.

In 2009, he played for Emelec. In 2010, he became a player and manager for Valle del Chota. He helped this club get promoted to a higher league. In 2011, he announced he was stopping his professional football career to focus on managing the club.

Playing for Ecuador's National Team

Agustín Delgado was a key player for the Ecuador national team. His first goal in the 2002 FIFA World Cup was also the very first goal Ecuador ever scored in a World Cup! This happened in a game against Mexico. He was one of the top scorers in the qualifying games for that tournament, with 9 goals.

Delgado was known for being a strong player. He was great at scoring goals with both feet and especially good at heading the ball. He knew where to be on the field to score. Because of his skills, he became a very important player in Ecuador and was known as one of the best strikers in South America.

He also helped Ecuador qualify for the World Cup again in 2006. He scored 5 goals in 10 games during the qualifying rounds. In the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Delgado scored a goal in Ecuador's 2–0 win against Poland. In the next game, he scored again in their 3–0 victory over Costa Rica. These goals helped Ecuador reach the last 16 teams, alongside the host country, Germany.

After the 2006 World Cup, Delgado decided to stop playing for the national team. He finished his international career having played 71 games and scoring a record 31 goals for Ecuador.

Agustín Delgado's Political Career

After his successful football career, Agustín Delgado decided to enter politics. In the Ecuadorian general election of 2013, he was chosen to be a member of the National Assembly. This is like being a representative in the government. He represented the Imbabura Province.

Delgado is a member of the PAIS Alliance political party. Interestingly, two of his former teammates from the national football team, Ulises de la Cruz and Iván Hurtado, also became members of the National Assembly for the same party.

Agustín Delgado has African roots. He has a speech difference that sometimes caused people to make fun of him online and in cartoons. However, the government agency that watches over communications took action against those who made fun of him.
