Ahhotep I was an important ancient Egyptian queen. She lived around 1560 to 1530 BC. This was near the end of the Seventeenth Dynasty of Egypt. Her name means "Iah (the Moon) is satisfied."
Ahhotep I was the daughter of Queen Tetisheri and Pharaoh Senakhtenre Ahmose. She was probably also the sister and wife of Pharaoh Seqenenre Tao. Ahhotep I had a very long and important life. She even ruled Egypt for a time as a queen regent for her young son, Ahmose I.
Her titles showed her high status. She was called a "Great Royal Wife." This was a very important title for a queen. She was also known as "King's Mother." This title meant she was the mother of a pharaoh.
Family of Ahhotep I
Ahhotep I came from a powerful royal family. Her mother was Queen Tetisheri. Her father was Pharaoh Senakhtenre Ahmose.
She married Pharaoh Seqenenre Tao. Many historians believe he was also her brother. This was sometimes common in ancient Egyptian royal families.
Ahhotep I was most likely the mother of Pharaoh Ahmose I. Ahmose I later became a very famous pharaoh. He helped unite Egypt.
She also had other children. These included Queen Ahmose-Nefertari. Ahmose-Nefertari later married her brother, Pharaoh Ahmose I. Other children were Prince Ahmose Sapair, Prince Binpu, Princess Ahmose-Henutemipet, Princess Ahmose-Nebetta, and Princess Ahmose-Tumerisy.
Life as a Queen
Ahhotep I was more than just a queen. She played an active role in protecting Egypt. A special stone carving from the time of her son, Ahmose I, tells us this. It says that Ahhotep I may have gathered soldiers. She helped defend the city of Thebes.
These events might have happened after her husband, Seqenenre Tao, died. Or they could have happened after her son, Kamose, died. The carving praises her actions:
She is the one who has accomplished the rites and taken care of Egypt... She has looked after her soldiers, she has guarded her, she has brought back her fugitives and collected together her deserters, she has pacified Upper Egypt and expelled her rebels.
This shows she was a strong leader. She helped keep Egypt safe and peaceful.
Ahhotep I lived to be quite old. She is mentioned in writings from the time of Pharaoh Amenhotep I. This was her grandson. Her steward, a person who managed her household, also mentioned her. This suggests she might have died during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose I. Thutmose I was a later pharaoh.
Her Tomb
Ahhotep I's outer coffin was found in a special burial place. This place is called TT320 in Deir el Bahari. The coffin shows the queen wearing a special wig. It also has a design that looks like feathers. This design is similar to other royal coffins.
Historians are not completely sure where Ahhotep I was originally buried. There are some ideas that her coffin might have been moved. The size of her coffin also helps experts figure out which queen it belonged to.
