The Seventeenth Dynasty of Egypt was a group of pharaohs who ruled in Upper Egypt. This period was part of the late Second Intermediate Period. They ruled for about 30 years, from around 1580 BC to 1550 BC.
These rulers were mostly from Thebes. They ruled at the same time as the Hyksos kings of the Fifteenth Dynasty. The Seventeenth Dynasty came after the Sixteenth Dynasty, which was also based in Thebes.
In 2012, French archaeologists found proof of King Senakhtenre. They found hieroglyphs with his name on a stone door at Karnak. This was the first time evidence of this king from his own lifetime was found.
The last two kings of this dynasty fought against the Hyksos. They wanted to free Egypt from Hyksos rule. This war led to a new period of united rule called the New Kingdom of Egypt.
Kamose was the last king of the Seventeenth Dynasty. He was the son of Seqenenre Tao and the brother of Ahmose I. Ahmose I became the first king of the Eighteenth Dynasty.
Some experts think the Seventeenth Dynasty might have started in Nubia. This is because many Nubians were in Egypt at that time. Also, X-ray studies of some pharaohs show they had features similar to Nubians.
