Early Life and Education
Ahmet Ümit was born in Gaziantep, a city in south-central Turkey, in 1960. His father sold traditional rugs called kilims, and his mother was a tailor. Ahmet was the youngest of seven children. He completed his primary and middle school in his hometown. He later finished high school in Ergani, Diyarbakır.
In 1979, Ahmet moved to Istanbul to study Public Administration at Marmara University. During his university years, he met his future wife, Vildan. They got married in 1981 and have a daughter named Gül.
Early Political Involvement
While at university, Ahmet Ümit became involved with a group that was against the military government in Turkey. He actively participated in campaigns, like the "No to the New Constitution" movement in 1982. This was after a military takeover in 1980. He even wrote a short story about a police event where his friends were arrested. This story was published in a journal in Prague, which was then part of Czechoslovakia. His first story was translated into 40 languages! In 1983, he finished his university studies.
Later, he joined a political party. In 1985, he received a scholarship to study in Moscow, which was then in the Soviet Union. He studied at the Social Sciences of the Russian Academy. He returned to Turkey in 1986.
Becoming a Writer
Ahmet Ümit started writing poems while he was studying in Moscow. His 1998 novel, Kar Kokusu (meaning "Odor of Snow"), shares some of his experiences from that time. In 1989, he decided to focus less on politics and more on writing. He published his poems in a book called Sokağın Zulası ("Stash of the Street").
During this period, he worked at an advertising agency owned by a friend. In 1990, he helped start a magazine about culture and art called Yine Hişt ("Look here again!"). He published his poems, stories, and articles in this magazine and others, like Adam Sanat, Öküz, Cumhuriyet, and the newspaper Yeni Yüzyıl.
First Books and TV Work
His first book of stories, Çıplak Ayaklıydı Gece ("Barefoot Night"), was published in 1992. It won an award called the "Ferit Oğuz Bayır Thought and Art Prize" that same year.
Ahmet Ümit also helped write the script for a police drama TV show called Çakalların İzinde ("Tracing the Jackals") in 1993. He wrote articles about famous detective fiction writers like Franz Kafka, Dostoyevsky, Patricia Highsmith, and Edgar Allan Poe. In 1995, he also published his first fairy tale book, Masal Masal İçinde (A Tale Within a Tale).
Books Adapted for Screen
Many of Ahmet Ümit's short stories have been turned into TV shows. These include Karanlıkta Koşanlar ("Runners in the Darkness") and Şeytan Ayrıntıda Gizlidir ("The devil is in the detail"). His novel Sis ve Gece ("Fog and Night") was even made into a movie in 2007.
In 2010, Ahmet Ümit created and hosted his own TV show on Habertürk TV called Yaşadığın Şehir ("The City, where I Live"). He is also a member of the advisory board for Okan University.
