Ahmet Ümit (born in 1960) is a famous Turkish author and poet. He is best known for writing exciting crime novels. His stories often involve mysteries and detective work, keeping readers on the edge of their seats!

Early Life and Studies

Ahmet Ümit was born in 1960 in Gaziantep, a city in south-central Turkey. His father sold traditional carpets called kilims, and his mother was a tailor. Ahmet was the youngest of seven children.

He finished his primary and middle school in his hometown. Later, he went to high school in Ergani, Diyarbakır. In 1979, he moved to Istanbul to study Public Administration at Marmara University. During his university years, he met his future wife, Vildan, and they got married in 1981. They have a daughter named Gül.

While at university, Ahmet Ümit joined a group that wanted to bring about positive changes in Turkey. He spoke out against certain government decisions, like a new constitution proposed after a military takeover in 1980. He even wrote a short story about his friends who were arrested for putting up protest posters. This story was published in a journal in Prague, which was then part of Czechoslovakia, and was translated into many languages! In 1983, he finished his university studies.

Later, he joined a political party. In 1985, this party sent him to Moscow, in the Soviet Union, to study. He learned a lot at the Social Sciences of the Russian Academy before returning home in 1986.

Becoming a Writer

Ahmet Ümit started writing poems when he was studying in Moscow. His novel Kar Kokusu (meaning "Odor of Snow"), published in 1998, shares some of his experiences from that time. In 1989, he decided to leave politics and focus on his writing. He published his poems in a book called Sokağın Zulası ("Stash of the Street").

Around this time, he worked at an advertising agency owned by a friend. In 1990, he helped start a cultural magazine called Yine Hişt ("Look here again!"). He published his poems, stories, and articles in this magazine and other well-known publications like Adam Sanat and Cumhuriyet.

His first book of short stories, Çıplak Ayaklıydı Gece ("Barefoot Night"), came out in 1992. It was so good that it won the "Ferit Oğuz Bayır Thought and Art Prize" that same year!

Ahmet Ümit also helped write the script for a TV show called Çakalların İzinde ("Tracing the Jackals") in 1993. This was a police drama, which is a type of show about police officers solving crimes. In 1995, he wrote essays about famous detective fiction authors like Franz Kafka, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Patricia Highsmith, and Edgar Allan Poe. He also published his first fairy tale book, Masal Masal İçinde (A Tale Within a Tale), in 1995.

Many of his short stories have been turned into TV shows, like Karanlıkta Koşanlar ("Runners in the Darkness") and Şeytan Ayrıntıda Gizlidir ("The devil is in the detail"). His novel Sis ve Gece ("Fog and Night") was even made into a movie in 2007. In 2010, Ahmet Ümit produced and hosted his own TV show called Yaşadığın Şehir ("The City, where I Live") on Habertürk TV.

Today, he is also a member of the advisory board at Okan University, sharing his knowledge and experience with students.
