Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee (born 15 April 1901 – died 27 May 1986) was an important Indian leader. He fought for India's freedom. Later, he became a politician. He served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal three times. He was from a place called Tamluk in West Bengal.

Early Life and Freedom Fight

Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee was born in Tamluk, West Bengal, in 1901. He was inspired by the ideas of Swami Vivekananda. During the Quit India Movement in 1942, he played a big role. This movement was a major protest against British rule in India.

He helped lead the Tamralipta Jatiya Sarkar. This was a local government formed by Indian people. It worked independently from British rule for a short time. This showed how much people wanted freedom.

Becoming Chief Minister

Ajoy Mukherjee was first a member of the Indian National Congress party. Later, he became a leader of the Bangla Congress party. This party worked with the Communist Party of India (Marxist). They formed governments together in West Bengal.

He became the Chief Minister of West Bengal in 1967. He served from March to November that year. He became Chief Minister again in 1969. This term lasted from February 1969 to March 1970. He also served a third short term in 1971.

Helping People in Need

In 1967, Ajoy Mukherjee won an election in the Arambagh area. He defeated another leader, Prafulla Chandra Sen. A young student leader named Narayan Ch Ghosh helped him win.

In 1968, Ajoy Mukherjee visited many flood-affected areas. He traveled by boat to see the damage. He wanted to help the people who were suffering. People were very happy to see him working hard for them.

Later Life and Recognition

Later, Ajoy Mukherjee rejoined the Indian National Congress party. He was offered a job as a minister in the central government. But he said no because of his age and health. He suggested that his colleague, Pranab Mukherjee, take the position instead. Pranab Mukherjee later became a State Minister.

In 1977, the Government of India honored Ajoy Mukherjee. He received the Padma Vibhushan award. This is one of India's highest civilian awards.

Ajoy Mukherjee passed away on 27 May 1986 in Calcutta.
