Akhmat-Khadzhi Abdulkhamidovich Kadyrov (23 August 1951 – 9 May 2004) was an important Russian politician. He was a religious leader, known as a Mufti, in the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria during the 1990s. This was a time of conflict in Chechnya.

During the First Chechen War, he fought against the Russian government. However, when the Second Chechen War began, he changed his support. He then worked with the Russian government. Later, he became the first President of the Chechen Republic in 2003. Before that, he was the head of the Chechen administration starting in 2000.

Sadly, Akhmad Kadyrov was killed on 9 May 2004. A bomb exploded during a Victory Day parade in Grozny, the capital city. His son, Ramzan Kadyrov, later became the President of the Chechen Republic in 2007.

Early Life and Religious Studies

Akhmad Abdulkhamidovich Kadyrov was born on 23 August 1951. His birthplace was Karaganda in what is now Kazakhstan. His family was Chechen and had been forced to leave Chechnya.

In 1957, his family was able to return home to the Shalinsky District in Chechnya. In 1980, he began to study Islam. He attended the Mir-i Arab Madrasah in Bukhara. Then, from 1982 to 1986, he studied at the Islamic University in Tashkent.

In the early 1990s, he came back to Chechnya. He founded an Islamic school called the Kurchaloy Islamic Institute in the village of Kurchaloy.

Role in Chechen Conflicts

After Chechnya declared its independence, Akhmad Kadyrov supported the president, Dzhokhar Dudayev. He fought in the First Chechen War as a commander for the Chechen side.

In 1995, he was chosen as the Chief Mufti of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. This made him a very important religious leader. He also became the head of the Spiritual Administration of the Muslims of the Chechen Republic.

By 1999, the focus of the Chechen forces began to change. Some groups became more interested in a religious war. Akhmad Kadyrov, as Chief Mufti, did not agree with some of these new ideas.

In the autumn of 1999, Kadyrov made a big decision. He decided to stop fighting against Russia. Instead, he offered his support to the Russian government during the Second Chechen War. The Chechen leader at the time, Aslan Maskhadov, removed him from his position as Chief Mufti. Kadyrov later stepped down himself to focus on his new role in government. His decision was partly because he cared about the difficult situation of the Chechen people.

After Russian forces took control of Chechnya in June 2000, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Kadyrov. He became the head of the Chechen Republic's administration. This was a temporary role. On 5 October 2003, he was elected the first President of the Chechen Republic. As president, he worked closely with Moscow. He also offered amnesty (forgiveness) to former rebel fighters. If they surrendered, they could join the Chechen police or loyalist forces.

Family Life

Akhmad Kadyrov had four children. He had two daughters named Zargan and Zulay. He also had two sons. His older son, Zelimkhan Kadyrov, passed away in May 2004. His younger son, Ramzan Kadyrov, later became a powerful leader in Chechnya. He was appointed prime minister and then president in March 2007.

On 9 May 2004, a terrible event happened. An explosion occurred at the Dinamo football stadium in Grozny. This was during a parade celebrating Soviet Victory Day. Akhmad Kadyrov was killed instantly. Several other people also died, including his bodyguards and a journalist. Many more were injured.

It was believed that the bomb had been hidden in a concrete support column during recent repairs. A Chechen rebel leader, Shamil Basayev, later said he was responsible for the attack.

Akhmad Kadyrov is remembered in Chechnya and beyond. The Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque in Grozny is named after him. Another mosque in the village of Abu Ghosh in Israel also carries his name. In 2017, the football club Terek Grozny was renamed Akhmat Grozny in his honor.
