Akinori Nakayama (中山 彰規, Nakayama Akinori, March 1, 1943 – March 9, 2025) was an amazing gymnast from Japan. He was born on March 1, 1943, in Nagoya. Akinori became famous for winning many medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships. He is one of only three gymnasts ever to win the Olympic gold medal on the rings twice! He studied at Chukyo University in Nagoya.

A Champion Gymnast

Akinori Nakayama was incredibly successful in gymnastics. In 1966, he won six medals at the World Championships. This included three gold medals for his team, the floor exercise, and the horizontal bar.

Two years later, he became the most successful male athlete at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He won four gold medals, one silver, and one bronze. This was a huge achievement!

In 1970, he continued his winning streak. He won four more world titles. These were for his team, on the rings, floor, and parallel bars. He then won four more medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

Life After Competing

After he stopped competing, Akinori Nakayama stayed involved in gymnastics. He became the vice-president of the Japanese Gymnastics Federation. He also worked as a gymnastics coach at his old university, Chukyo University.

In 2005, his amazing career was recognized. He was added to the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. This is a special place for the greatest gymnasts of all time. Akinori Nakayama passed away on March 9, 2025, at 82 years old.
