Akinori Nakayama (中山 彰規, Nakayama Akinori, March 1, 1943 – March 9, 2025) was a famous Japanese gymnast. He won many gold medals at the Olympic Games. Nakayama was born in Nagoya, Japan, on March 1, 1943. He studied at Chukyo University in Nagoya. He is one of only three gymnasts to win the Olympic gold medal in the rings event twice.

A Champion Gymnast's Journey

Akinori Nakayama was an amazing athlete. He won six medals at the World Championships in 1966. These included three gold medals. He earned gold for his team, in the floor exercise, and on the horizontal bar.

Olympic Success in Mexico City

Two years later, Nakayama competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He was the most successful male athlete there. He won four gold medals, one silver, and one bronze. His gold medals were for the team event, rings, parallel bars, and horizontal bar. He also won silver in floor exercise and bronze in the all-around competition.

More World Titles and Olympic Medals

In 1970, Nakayama continued his winning streak. He won four more world titles. These were for the team competition, rings, floor, and parallel bars. He then added four more medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. He won gold with his team and in the rings event. He also took silver in floor exercise and bronze in the all-around.

Life After Gymnastics

After he stopped competing, Nakayama stayed involved in gymnastics. He became the vice-president of the Japanese Gymnastics Federation. He also coached gymnastics at his old university, Chukyo University. In 2005, he was honored by being added to the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Akinori Nakayama passed away on March 9, 2025, at the age of 82.
