Allen Joseph Ecuyer (born October 15, 1937 – died April 28, 2012) was a talented American football player. He played both in college and professionally in the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Who Was Al Ecuyer?
Al Ecuyer was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1937. He grew up in his hometown and went to Jesuit High School there. He became known for his skills on the football field.
College Football Star
Al Ecuyer played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He was a key player from 1956 to 1958. He played as a guard, a position on the offensive line. Al was a starter in all three of his college years.
In 1957, he was named a consensus first-team All-American. This means he was recognized as one of the best college players in the country. His teammates also chose him as a co-captain for the 1958 Notre Dame football team.
Playing in the CFL
After college, Al Ecuyer moved on to play professional football. He joined the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played as both a guard and a linebacker. A linebacker is a defensive player who helps stop the other team.
He played for the Edmonton Eskimos from 1959 to 1965. Then he played for the Toronto Argonauts in 1966. His last team was the Montreal Alouettes, where he played in 1967 and 1968.
Al Ecuyer played in 141 CFL games during his career. In his first year, he was named a Western Conference All-Star as a linebacker. He also intercepted 13 passes, running them back for a total of 161 yards.
Life After Football
After his football career ended, Al Ecuyer worked in the financial world. He became a vice-president of investments at Prudential Securities.
Al Ecuyer passed away in 2012 in New Orleans, his hometown.
