The Alabama beach mouse (scientific name: Peromyscus polionotus ammobates) is a tiny, special type of oldfield mouse. It lives only along the beautiful Alabama coast in the United States. This little mouse is currently considered an endangered species, meaning it needs our help to survive.

What Does the Alabama Beach Mouse Look Like?
This small mouse is usually about 12 to 15 centimeters (5 to 6 inches) long. That's roughly the length of a pencil! It weighs between 10 and 17 grams, which is less than a handful of coins. Its tail is quite long, making up more than half of its total body length.
The Alabama beach mouse has soft fur that can be light brown or pale gray. Its belly and feet are white. Many of these mice also have a dark brown stripe running down their back. These colors help them blend in with the sandy beaches where they live.
Where Do These Mice Live?
The Alabama beach mouse once lived across a large part of the Fort Morgan Peninsula in Alabama. This area stretched from Ono Island all the way to Fort Morgan. By 2019, scientists observed populations in a few key places. These included areas near Fort Morgan, inside the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, and a group that was brought back to Gulf State Park. Sadly, they are no longer thought to live in areas east of Gulf State Park.
Their Coastal Home
These special mice are found only in the sandy sand dunes along the coast. They are nocturnal, which means they are most active at night. During the day, they rest safely in their burrowed nests hidden within the dunes. These burrows help protect them from floods and bad weather.
What do they eat?
The Alabama beach mouse enjoys a diet of various plant seeds and small insects. They especially like slopes covered in sand that have plants like sea oats, beach grass, and other small plants. These plants are important for their food and shelter.
Why Are Beach Mice Important?

What Threats Do They Face?
The biggest challenges for the Alabama beach mouse come from human activities and natural events.

Protecting the Alabama Beach Mouse
Because of these threats, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officially listed the Alabama beach mouse as an endangered species in 1986. This listing means they are protected by law.
Many efforts are underway to help these mice. They are protected in special areas like the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge in Baldwin County, Alabama. In the past, environmental groups even stopped new construction in areas where the mice live to protect their habitat. These actions help ensure a future for this unique coastal creature.
