Alain Aspect (born 15 June 1947) is a French physicist. He is famous for his experiments with quantum entanglement. This is a strange connection between tiny particles.
In 2022, Aspect won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared it with John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger. They won for their work with "entangled photons." Photons are tiny particles of light. Their experiments showed that a key idea in physics, called "Bell inequalities," was broken. This work also helped start "quantum information science."

Alain Aspect's Early Life and Studies
Alain Aspect studied at the École Normale Supérieure de Cachan. This is a top school in France. In 1969, he earned a high-level degree in physics. He then got his PhD in 1971 from the École supérieure d'optique. This school is now part of Paris-Saclay University. After his studies, he taught in Cameroon for three years.
Groundbreaking Experiments
In the early 1980s, Aspect did very important experiments. These were called Bell test experiments. They looked at quantum entanglement. This is when two particles are linked, even if they are far apart. If you measure one particle, the other instantly changes.
Famous scientists like Albert Einstein thought this was "ghostly action at a distance." They found it hard to believe. Aspect's experiments showed that this strange connection really does happen. Even when particles are very far from each other, they stay connected. He finished his advanced research degree in 1983.
In 2008, Aspect received an honorary degree from Heriot-Watt University.
Alain Aspect's Research and Discoveries
Aspect's experiments built on earlier work by Stuart Freedman and John Clauser. His tests helped prove that "Bell's inequalities" are broken. This means that the strange connections in quantum mechanics are real. His work helped close some "loopholes" in earlier experiments. These loopholes were small gaps that allowed for other explanations.
After his work on Bell's inequalities, Aspect started new research. He studied how to cool atoms using lasers. He also looked into "Bose–Einstein condensates." These are special states of matter. He did this work at the Kastler-Brossel Laboratory.

Aspect was a deputy director at the École supérieure d'optique until 1994. He is a member of the French Academy of Sciences. He is also a professor at the École Polytechnique.

Awards and Recognition
Alain Aspect has received many honors for his scientific work. In 2015, he became a Foreign Member of the Royal Society. This is a very respected science group. They recognized him for his important experiments in quantum physics.
His work showed that quantum mechanics is correct. It proved that particles can be linked even without faster-than-light communication. He also showed that light particles (photons) can act like both waves and particles. He was the first to compare how different types of particles behave. He also showed a special effect called Anderson localization in very cold atoms.
In 2005, he won the gold medal from the Centre national de la recherche scientifique. This is a top research award in France. In 2010, he shared the Wolf Prize in physics. He also received the Niels Bohr International Gold Medal and the UNESCO Niels Bohr Medal in 2013. The city of Paris gave him a medal in 2011. He also won the Balzan Prize in 2013. In 2014, he was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour.
An asteroid, 33163 Alainaspect, was named after him in 2019.
