Alan started the 2011–12 season by scoring three goals in a match against a Latvian team. However, he got a serious knee injury in August 2011. This injury kept him from playing for many months. He returned to training in November 2012. He still managed to score 11 goals in 14 league matches during the 2012–13 season.

The 2013–14 season was very successful for Alan. He scored another hat-trick in February 2014. He also helped his team win both the Austrian Football Bundesliga and the Austrian Cup. This meant they won two major trophies in one season! Alan was the second-highest goal scorer in the league that year.

The next season also started well for Alan. In October 2014, he scored three goals in a UEFA Europa League group stage match. He scored two more goals in November, helping Salzburg become the first Austrian club to win in Scotland. Even though he left the club halfway through the season, he was one of the top goal scorers in the Europa League.

Moving to Guangzhou Evergrande

On January 16, 2015, Alan signed a four-year contract with Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao. He was given the number 7 jersey. Soon after joining, Alan suffered another serious knee injury during training. This kept him out of action for several months.

Alan finally returned to play on March 6, 2016, more than a year after his injury. He scored his first goal for Guangzhou in April 2016. He then scored in five more matches in a row. Alan scored 18 goals in 35 games that season. Guangzhou won both the 2016 Chinese Super League and the 2016 Chinese FA Cup.

In 2017, Alan continued to play a key role for Guangzhou Evergrande. He scored the winning goal in the 2017 Chinese FA Super Cup and was named the best player of the tournament. He made 43 appearances and scored 21 goals that season. Guangzhou won their seventh league title in a row.

Alan started the 2018 season by scoring in the 2018 Chinese FA Super Cup, winning the best player award again. He scored three goals in one league match in March. Later that month, he received a suspension for a few matches. Despite this, he scored important goals in the 2018 AFC Champions League.
